My heritage is German. I scream it. In fact, if you didn't know I was German, I think you would be crazy. Not only do I have the stereotypical coloring, etc., but my entire family hails from there. So what?? I mean, who really cares? I think that I do. World cup is going on and everyone is cheering for a country that they feel best represents themselves. I see the passion and pride that most people emit during the matches, and the chants that they shout for their respective team. It makes me question why my family has not held up the "We are German...Loud and proud" attitude.
I do realize that they came over in the early and mid 1900's. This was a time in which the world treated Germans as Muslims are treated now. But it makes me sad that we tried to change our past to fit in with the North American ideals. True, they had to be housed in work camps during the war, and even more true that we come from a military background. But the thing is that everyone in the world cup has put transgressions behind them and are rooting for their respective teams.
My plan: Go Germany! I am re-instating my German roots. I have learnt and memorized all of the stats associated with the German soccer team, picked my favorite player (Andre Friedrich) and I am all decked out in German attire. I am re-learning how to cook all of the old German recipes and update them into modern cuisine forms (soy milk as a substitute). I think it is important to remember your heritage. I am proud to say that I am fondly rediscovering mine.

Glad to see you're blogging again :)
My great great great grandparents (so 6 generations ago) came from Germany & Wales, and while I feel no connection to any country but Canada, I've also gone back to my German roots and say GECHEN GERMANY!!
Keep bloggin babe...I'll definitely read, even if no one else does (I don't know if that's encouraging or not though, but it is a good outlet!)
